Designing and integrating interoperable services

Guidance and references to ensure secure data exchange and integration between public administration systems.

Why interoperability is a key concept

Interoperability enables public administration digital services to communicate with each other securely. APIs make integration between different systems possible according to shared rules.

This makes it easier to realize efficient and reliable digital services built on reusable components.

How to proceed

Follow these steps and resume them as the service evolves to update the API, verify changes, and republish versions.

  1. 1

    Search

Learn about the APIs available in the catalog and use the practical examples as a reference for integrating them into your institution's services or creating new ones.

Access the National Digital Data Platform (PDND) to request access.

  2. 2

    Develop

Create APIs using available tools and support channels.

Consult and reuse ontologies, controlled vocabularies, and data schemas to ensure semantic consistency and interoperability.

  3. 3

    Check

During the development stages, check that the API meets the OpenAPI specification and is syntactically correct. You can do this using the automatic checking and validation tools.

  4. 4

    Publish

Publish e-services, consisting of one or more APIs, in the National Digital Data Platform (PDND) testing environment. After testing, make them available in the catalog so that other administrations can discover and use them.

What you can find at api.gov.it

It is the information portal dedicated to interoperability and APIs in Public Administration. It collects the API catalog, practical examples and useful content to understand how they work and how to integrate them into your services.
